Six Arrested in Attack on TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur

Kolkata, May 31: Police have arrested six individuals in connection with the attack and harassment of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

Banerjee visited Sonarpur on Saturday to meet the family of a Trinamool worker who was killed in post-election violence. During his visit, he faced protests from a group of individuals who hurled eggs and bricks at his convoy while chanting slogans.

As he walked towards the deceased worker’s home, Banerjee encountered further opposition. Some protesters attempted to push him and even tried to punch him, despite the presence of security personnel.

Following the incident, concerns were raised regarding the police’s security arrangements. The police initiated an investigation and subsequently arrested six suspects.

According to police reports, a team from the Sonarpur police station conducted an overnight search operation in the area. They also reviewed video footage related to the attack.

Based on the initial investigation, the police identified six individuals from the footage and apprehended them. Authorities stated that all arrested suspects are local residents who were present at the scene during the incident.

The police are now interrogating the arrested individuals to determine if others were involved in the attack. Additionally, police patrols in the area have been increased.

A police spokesperson stated, “A search operation was conducted on Saturday night. By Sunday morning, six individuals had been arrested. The investigation is ongoing.”

After the incident, Abhishek Banerjee was escorted out of the area under police protection and taken to a private hospital located on EM Bypass in Kolkata. However, after a preliminary examination, doctors concluded that hospitalization was unnecessary. He was then transferred to another private hospital near Minto Park, where the same assessment was made. During this time, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was present with him at the hospital.

Mamata Banerjee criticized the BJP regarding the incident, stating, “For now, treatment will be administered at home. Necessary saline and oxygen will be provided at home. If needed, Abhishek will be taken to Hyderabad for treatment.”
