New Delhi, July 22: The political atmosphere in Delhi has intensified due to student protests and police actions against opposition leaders. MPs from opposition parties, including Congress, staged a protest in Parliament, accusing the central government and Delhi police of suppressing democratic rights. Congress MPs donned black attire and demanded the government engage in dialogue regarding the students’ demands. Prominent leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were present during the protest.
Speaking to reporters, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticized the government for not addressing the students’ concerns. She emphasized that students are merely raising their issues and deserve to be heard. “We stand with the students and amplify their voices. They seek dialogue and improvements in the system. Students work hard and dream of a better future. Ignoring their problems will adversely affect their future,” she stated.
She accused the government of undermining democratic values, asserting that citizens should have the right to voice their concerns both on the streets and in Parliament. She described the opposition’s protest as a vital part of the democratic process.
Congress MP Nasir Hussain condemned the government’s treatment of students during protests. He alleged that police used batons, tear gas, and water cannons against the demonstrators. “Students and youth are protesting for their demands, yet they faced harsh treatment,” he remarked.
Hussain further pointed out that the police’s actions indicate the government’s unwillingness to listen to the issues faced by students and youth. He noted that Congress MPs wore black clothing in protest against these actions.
Additionally, Congress MP K. Suresh stated that the black attire symbolizes opposition to the alleged mistreatment of opposition leaders. He claimed that the police behaved inappropriately towards opposition MPs, prompting Congress to observe this as a ‘Black Day.’
Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal also targeted Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, stating that the education system and issues concerning students fall directly under the minister’s responsibility. He accused the government of failing to address critical questions related to students and demanded the minister resign for moral accountability.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee expressed support for the students. He mentioned that if questions are asked in a biased manner, he would not respond. He stressed that it is the government’s duty to listen to students’ problems and take their demands seriously.
