New Delhi, May 30: Residents of New Delhi have finally found relief from the relentless heat as the temperature has dropped significantly over the past 48 hours. The mercury had soared above 45 degrees Celsius, causing discomfort across the national capital.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed a notable decline of 7 to 9 degrees Celsius within just 24 hours, providing much-needed respite from the sweltering conditions.
On May 27, several areas in Delhi were gripped by extreme heat, with temperatures recorded at 45.6 degrees Celsius at the Ridge Station, 45.4 degrees Celsius in Aaya Nagar, 44.6 degrees Celsius in Palam, and 44.3 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung.
By May 29, the situation had dramatically changed. The temperature at the Ridge fell to 36.8 degrees Celsius, while Aaya Nagar recorded 36.0 degrees Celsius, Palam at 35.2 degrees Celsius, Lodi Road at 35.7 degrees Celsius, and Safdarjung at 36.8 degrees Celsius. This indicates a substantial drop of nearly 8 to 9 degrees in various locations.
According to IMD officials, this sudden change was caused by a western disturbance affecting northwestern India. This weather system brought strong winds, cloud cover, and light rain, helping to alleviate the heat. The combination of light rain and gusty winds played a crucial role in reducing both maximum and minimum temperatures.
A senior scientist from the IMD stated that such a temperature drop has provided significant relief to citizens, especially the elderly, children, and outdoor workers.
The department has forecast relatively pleasant weather for the coming days, with maximum temperatures expected to remain between 35 to 38 degrees Celsius before gradually rising.
The unexpected coolness has also led to a slight improvement in air quality and reduced the risk of heat-related illnesses in hospitals. The surge in electricity demand due to excessive air conditioning is also expected to see a decline.
However, meteorologists have warned that while this western disturbance offers temporary relief, the weather in Delhi during May and June remains uncertain. Residents are advised to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, even as the weather remains cooler than earlier in the week.
