New Delhi, May 24: The month of Purushottam, also known as Adhik Maas, holds great significance in Sanatan Dharma. On May 25, 2026 (Monday), the tenth day of the Shukla Paksha in Jyeshtha month will be celebrated as Ganga Dussehra. This day is particularly important for performing rituals such as bathing in the Ganges, making donations, and conducting prayers.
Notably, on Monday, Ravi Yoga will prevail throughout the day, along with the auspicious Abhijit Muhurat. According to the Brahma Purana, the descent of Goddess Ganga from the heavenly realm to Earth occurred on the tenth day of Jyeshtha Shukla, under the Hasta Nakshatra. Bathing in the Ganges on this day is believed to absolve one of ten types of sins, which is why it is referred to as Ganga Dussehra. This year, the festival falls during the Purushottam month, making it even more special.
It is believed that bathing in the Ganges, using Ganga water for purification, or worshipping Goddess Ganga at home yields significant benefits. For those unable to reach the river, it is recommended to bathe with Ganga water at home or meditate on it while performing rituals. Acts of charity, feeding Brahmins, and serving cows are also considered highly meritorious on this day.
On Monday, sunrise will occur at 5:26 AM, and sunset will be at 7:11 PM. The Nakshatra will be Uttara Phalguni until 4:08 AM on May 25, and the Yoga will be Vajra until 3:15 AM.
Regarding auspicious timings on Monday, Abhijit Muhurat will be from 11:51 AM to 12:46 PM, Vijay Muhurat from 2:36 PM to 3:31 PM, and Godhuli Muhurat from 7:09 PM to 7:30 PM. The presence of Ravi Yoga throughout the day is considered highly favorable for commencing any auspicious activities.
In terms of inauspicious timings, Rahu Kaal will be from 7:09 AM to 8:52 AM, Yamagand from 10:35 AM to 12:18 PM, and Gulika Kaal from 2:01 PM to 3:44 PM.
