Thiruvananthapuram, June 1: Schools in Kerala reopened on Monday after a two-month summer break, welcoming nearly 5 million students back to their classrooms. This event marks one of the largest public gatherings in the state.
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan inaugurated the state-level ceremony at the Government Model Girls Higher Secondary School in Pattom, officially launching the new academic year.
New State Education Minister N. Shamsudheen distributed sweets to the children. Unlike previous years under the leadership of the Left Democratic Front, which celebrated school openings with grandeur, this year’s ‘Praveshotsavam’ (school inauguration ceremony) was marked by simplicity.
The government prioritized modest celebrations over extravagant events, focusing on academic preparations and student welfare. Throughout Kerala, social media was filled with pictures and videos of children returning to school.
This year, over 300,000 children are enrolling in school for the first time, further heightening the excitement surrounding the reopening. Education officials confirmed that all necessary preparations, including the distribution of textbooks and teaching materials, were completed in advance.
For Kerala, Monday was not just a day for schools to reopen; it also signified the return of familiar rhythms and routines that give the state’s social calendar its unique identity. Children are back to school.
