Saudi Arabia Shoots Down Three Drones Infiltrating from Iraqi Airspace

Riyadh, May 18: The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Defense has reported the interception and destruction of three drones that entered the country’s airspace from Iraqi territory. The ministry has issued a warning, stating that all necessary military measures will be taken in response to any attempts at aggression.

Major General Turki Al-Maliki, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense, confirmed that the drones were neutralized after breaching Saudi airspace.

In his statement, Al-Maliki emphasized that Saudi Arabia reserves the right to respond at an appropriate time and place. He reiterated the commitment to protect the nation’s sovereignty, security, and the safety of its citizens and residents against any form of aggression.

Last month, the Saudi Foreign Ministry summoned the Iraqi ambassador in Riyadh. The ministry cited the use of drones launched from Iraqi territory as a continuing threat to the Kingdom and other Gulf nations.

In a related development, Saudi Arabia condemned a drone attack on the United Arab Emirates that resulted in a fire outside the Barakah nuclear power plant. The UAE Ministry of Defense reported successfully intercepting two drones, while a third collided with a generator near the nuclear facility. The ministry noted that these drones originated from the western border but did not provide further details.

The ongoing conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran has contributed to instability in Saudi Arabia. Tensions have escalated since February, following attacks initiated by the U.S. and Israel against Iran. The Saudi Ministry has announced the interception and destruction of multiple drones entering its airspace in recent months.

In retaliation for the U.S. and Israeli strikes, Iran has also taken action, targeting Israel and U.S. allied nations in the Gulf, including the UAE, and has closed the Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire was brokered with Pakistan’s mediation on April 8, but no permanent agreement was reached during talks in Islamabad. Subsequently, U.S. President Donald Trump extended the ceasefire indefinitely.
