Mumbai, February 23: The political temperature in Maharashtra has risen with the commencement of the budget session. The opposition has launched a sharp attack on the government regarding the vacant position of the Leader of the Opposition in both the Assembly and the Legislative Council. Sanjay Raut, a member of the Uddhav Thackeray faction, has opened a front against the government, labeling this issue as a significant question related to democracy.

In a press conference on Monday, Raut targeted Devendra Fadnavis and the Mahayuti government. He stated that running the house without a Leader of the Opposition is a “mockery of the Constitution.” Raut accused the government of undermining the dignity of democratic institutions through its majority.

He emphasized that the role of the Leader of the Opposition is crucial in parliamentary democracy, as it ensures government accountability and control. According to him, conducting house proceedings without an opposition leader is not only unethical but also against constitutional values. He questioned why, if the government holds a majority, it is reluctant to appoint an opposition leader.

Raut pointed out that the positions of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and state assemblies are essential components of democracy. He remarked that running the house without this position is akin to mocking democracy. He believes this increases the risk of unchecked power and can disrupt institutional balance.

Specifically targeting the Bharatiya Janata Party and Chief Minister Fadnavis, Raut alleged that the opposition has been demanding this position for several sessions, but it has been postponed under various technical pretexts. He described this as a violation of democratic traditions.

Raut noted that it is possibly the first time during the budget session in Maharashtra that both houses lack a Leader of the Opposition. If this issue remains unresolved, the opposition will consider legal action and also take the matter to the public. “Why is the BJP so afraid? You have the numbers, yet you hesitate to accommodate an official opposition leader in the house,” he stated.

He condemned this as a breach of democratic standards and accused the government of trying to evade institutional control.
