New Delhi: Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz triumphed over Novak Djokovic with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 win to claim the men’s singles title at the 2026 Australian Open. Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar praised Alcaraz for his patience and calm demeanor following the victory.
On Sunday, Alcaraz made tennis history by winning his first Australian Open men’s singles title, becoming the youngest professional player to complete a career Grand Slam.
By defeating Djokovic in his 11th Australian Open final, the 22-year-old Alcaraz became the youngest player in the Open Era to win all four major tournaments, achieving the career Grand Slam.
Alcaraz is now the eighth player to complete a career Grand Slam, joining the ranks of Fred Perry (1935), Don Budge (1938), Rod Laver (1962), Roy Emerson (1964), Andre Agassi (1999), Roger Federer (2009), Rafael Nadal (2010), and Novak Djokovic (2015). Among them, Don Budge and Rod Laver are notable for winning the Grand Slam within a single calendar year.
Sachin Tendulkar took to the social media platform X to share, “What stood out the most at the Australian Open was Carlos Alcaraz’s patience. In long rallies, he remained calm, kept pressure on his opponent, and wisely chose his opportunities. Watching the way he covered the court with such speed and precision was a delight. Congratulations to Carlos Alcaraz. Novak Djokovic also put up a fantastic fight.”
With this win, Alcaraz has now secured seven Grand Slam singles titles, equalling the all-time list alongside John McEnroe and Mats Wilander.
His victory in Melbourne underscored the dominance of Alcaraz and his major rival, Jannik Sinner, in recent Grand Slam tournaments. Together, they have won nine of the last Grand Slam titles, beginning with Djokovic’s 2023 US Open win. However, Sinner faced defeat against Djokovic in the 2026 Australian Open semifinals.
