Russia-India Summit 2026: Deputy Foreign Minister Hopes for PM Modis Participation

Moscow, April 1: A bilateral summit is set to take place in Moscow later this year. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko has expressed hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the event.

According to Russia’s leading news agency TASS, Rudenko stated, “This year, it is Russia’s turn to host the Russia-India summit. We expect that the Indian Prime Minister will take advantage of President Vladimir Putin’s invitation and visit Russia at a convenient time.”

He emphasized the importance of maintaining regular and systematic contact between Russia and India at various levels.

In December last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a significant state visit to India. This visit lasted two days in the national capital and included summit-level talks, formal events, and numerous bilateral discussions. Key topics during these discussions included defense, economic cooperation, energy relations, and regional security.

During this time, Putin held formal talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where both leaders reviewed the status of the India-Russia partnership.

Following this, the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit was held, resulting in a joint statement that outlined priorities for the upcoming years. Special emphasis was placed on cooperation in energy, nuclear power, trade, defense, and technology.

President Droupadi Murmu also hosted a banquet at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in honor of President Putin.

In 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Russia twice: first in July for the 22nd Russia-India Summit, and later in October for the BRICS summit held in Kazan.

Russia has been a longstanding and reliable partner for India. The development of India-Russia relations has been a significant pillar of India’s foreign policy.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, since the announcement of the ‘India-Russia Strategic Partnership’ in 2000, there has been a qualitative improvement in bilateral relations. Cooperation has increased in nearly all areas, including politics, security, defense, trade, economy, science and technology, culture, and people-to-people contacts.

During President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India in 2010, this strategic partnership was elevated to the level of a “special and privileged strategic partnership.”
