New Delhi, April 1: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is set to launch the women’s edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2026 this July. This announcement was made on Tuesday by Rubaba Dowla, the director and chairperson of the women’s wing of the BCB. However, the situation regarding the resumption of cricketing ties with India remains unclear.
Rubaba Dowla declined to comment on the resumption of cricket relations between the two countries or the planned tours of the Indian men’s and women’s teams to Bangladesh. These tours were postponed last year due to the prevailing conditions in Bangladesh.
The tours of the Indian women’s and men’s teams were delayed as cricket relations between the two nations deteriorated to their lowest point under the rule of an interim government in Bangladesh.
A few months ago, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) instructed the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) IPL franchise to release Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their 2026 squad.
This decision did not sit well with the Bangladeshi government and public. The BCB cited ‘security concerns’ for requesting that their matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 be moved from India to Sri Lanka.
Despite repeated assessments, the ICC rejected such requests, stating there was no security threat to Bangladeshi players. Ultimately, Bangladesh was replaced by Scotland in the T20 World Cup.
The matter has since been resolved, allowing the BCB to avoid heavy fines from the ICC and securing the rights to host an ICC event in 2028.
Bangladesh had also decided to impose a ban on broadcasting IPL matches within the country, but this restriction has recently been lifted. According to the ICC’s Future Tours Program, there is a series scheduled between India and Bangladesh, but it has currently been put on hold.
