Ryan Williams Excited for His Debut with India on March 31

Kochi, March 28: The date March 31 holds special significance for India’s national football team. Ryan Williams, a 32-year-old midfielder born in Australia, is set to make his debut for India against Hong Kong in the final round of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers. He will don the ‘Blue Tigers’ jersey at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi.

Williams received FIFA approval to represent India in November 2025. However, reaching this milestone required him to navigate a lengthy process involving passport issues, documentation, and a transfer from the Football Federation of Australia to India. He expressed his relief, saying, “It’s a huge relief. Finally, everything is done, and now I’m here.”

Initially, many doubted his chances, but Williams remained steadfast in his determination. He brings a wealth of international experience, having played for clubs in Australia and England, including Portsmouth, Fulham, Oxford United, Barnsley, Rotherham United, and Perth Glory.

In 2023, he joined Bengaluru FC. Previously, he had represented Australia at the under-20 and under-23 levels, as well as in a friendly match with the national team. For Williams, this debut is not just a sporting achievement but also a moment of family pride. He shared, “My grandfather played in the Santosh Trophy. Now, it’s very special for his grandson to play for the Indian national team. The family is proud of this.”

Ryan Williams received a warm welcome upon joining the national team. He noted, “I feel much more comfortable now compared to the last camp. Everyone in the team is very nice and humble.”

Williams believes his journey will inspire other players of Indian origin. He stated, “My long-term goal is to motivate other (Indian-origin) players to do the same. No matter what people say, it’s possible. You can come here, and you can make a difference.” Currently, Ryan is focused on the match on March 31, marking the end of a long journey across continents and the beginning of a new chapter in the blue jersey of India.
