Rising Discontent Transforms into Mass Movement, Says Raees Sheikh

Mumbai, July 20: Raees Sheikh, a legislator from the Samajwadi Party, has criticized the central government in light of the recent protests organized by the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP). He stated that growing public discontent over various issues is evolving into a widespread mass movement, urging the government to engage in dialogue on these matters.

In an interview with a news agency, Sheikh remarked that the security measures at Jantar Mantar have effectively turned the area into a prison. He emphasized that these protests are not limited to any single political party, be it the Samajwadi Party, Congress, or any other organization; rather, they represent the anger and dissatisfaction of the general public. He noted that the government’s alleged failures on various public interest issues have compelled people to take to the streets.

Sheikh highlighted incidents like the NEET paper leak, which have plunged millions of students and their families into deep despair, leading some to tragic outcomes. He pointed out that there are numerous issues related to education, youth, and other public concerns where the government has failed to provide effective solutions. This has resulted in ongoing protests not only in Delhi but across several states. He asserted that the public aims to convey through these movements that there is widespread dissatisfaction with government policies.

Referring to social activist Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike, Sheikh mentioned that the court’s intervention to end his fast and the subsequent hospitalization against his will has further fueled public anger and strengthened the movement.

Sheikh also responded to the heightened security measures to prevent protesters from gathering outside Parliament. He stated that Parliament is the highest platform of democracy and is meant for the public. If citizens come to express their views or seek dialogue, the government should engage with them. He believes that if the process of dialogue is not initiated, protests and struggles will continue.

Sheikh claimed that this movement has transcended mere protests and has taken on the form of a mass movement. He accused the government of showing no signs of changing its stance or making meaningful efforts to engage in dialogue with protesters or the opposition. He emphasized that dialogue is the most effective means of resolving issues in a democracy, urging the government to take serious steps in this direction.
