Guwahati, July 20: Assam is expected to experience significant rainfall over the next five days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted moderate rain across most parts of the state, with warnings of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning in certain areas.
Authorities have advised residents, especially those living in low-lying regions, to remain vigilant due to the potential for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning.
The IMD attributes these weather conditions to the persistent cyclonic circulation over central Assam and neighboring Nagaland, along with an active monsoon trough extending from North India to the northeastern Bay of Bengal.
In the past 24 hours, Assam has witnessed light to moderate rainfall in most areas, while some locations in Golaghat and Dhubri districts recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Reports indicate heavy rainfall in parts of Jorhat, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Biswanath, and Nagaon districts as well.
The highest rainfall was recorded in Pandu, Kamrup (Metro) at 20 cm, followed by Kukurmara Mirza in Kamrup at 17 cm, and 14 cm at Guwahati Airport. Bokakhat and Golaghat each received 13 cm, while Agomoni and Kamakhya recorded 12 cm.
Officials have warned that the ongoing rains could worsen flooding and waterlogging in districts already affected by rising river levels.
Disaster management officials are closely monitoring the situation and have urged the public to heed weather advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall.
The IMD has recommended that residents stay alert to local flooding, reduced visibility, lightning, and disruptions in road traffic, as the rainy spell is expected to continue throughout the week.
