Chisinau, July 20: President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Chisinau on Monday, marking the first visit by an Indian president to Moldova. She is on a state visit that includes stops in North Macedonia and Romania. Upon her arrival at Chisinau International Airport, she was warmly welcomed by Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mihai Popsoi.
The President’s Secretariat shared the news on social media platform X, stating, “President Droupadi Murmu has reached Chisinau, Moldova, as part of her state visit to Moldova, North Macedonia, and Romania. Upon arrival at Chisinau International Airport, she was greeted by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popsoi. This marks the first visit by an Indian president to Moldova.”
President Murmu is visiting Moldova at the invitation of President Maia Sandu. During her stay, she will engage in discussions with President Sandu and meet with Igor Grosu, the President of the Moldovan Parliament. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, she will also interact with members of the Moldova-India Parliamentary Friendship Group. Additionally, she is scheduled to address a business forum and members of the Indian community.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated, “India and Moldova share good and friendly relations. This visit will be a significant and historic milestone, enhancing the partnership between the two countries. There is substantial potential for mutually beneficial cooperation in agriculture, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, IT, and education.”
On July 17, during a special briefing regarding President Murmu’s visit to Moldova, Secretary (West) of the Ministry of External Affairs, Siby George, noted that the visit would provide an opportunity to review the relations between the two countries and discuss ways to enhance cooperation. He emphasized that President Murmu’s visit would help strengthen business-to-business linkages and promote trade and investment relations.
Siby George added, “This visit allows for a comprehensive review of the entire spectrum of relations between the two countries and discussions on ways to enhance cooperation, advancing the relationship through political goodwill into significant partnerships in areas such as trade and investment, digital technology, innovation, renewable energy, healthcare, education, agriculture, culture, and connectivity.”
The Moldova leg is the first stop on President Murmu’s three-country tour, which will continue with high-level meetings in North Macedonia and Romania.
