New Delhi, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : In New Delhi, the increasing trend of sedentary work lifestyles has led to widespread issues like back pain, stiffness, and constipation. To combat these ailments, many are turning to yoga as a remedy. A proper diet combined with yoga can offer numerous health benefits, and one particularly effective pose is the Supine Spinal Twist, known in Sanskrit as ‘Supta Matsyendrasana.’
This pose is beneficial for relieving lower back pain and stiffness while also promoting mental tranquility. The term ‘Supta Matsyendrasana’ is derived from three Sanskrit words: ‘Supta’ meaning to lie down, ‘Matsyendra’ referring to the legendary yogi Matsyendranath, and ‘Asana’ meaning posture.
The Supine Spinal Twist is a restorative version of the Half Matsyendrasana, providing the essential benefits of spinal rotation in a passive, gravity-assisted position without requiring much effort. It is deeply rooted in classical yoga traditions, promoting relaxation, stability, and reduced tension in the spine. The Ministry of AYUSH in India recognizes this pose as an excellent practice for enhancing spinal flexibility, alleviating back pain, and improving digestive health.
To perform the Supine Spinal Twist, one lies on their back with one knee bent across the body while extending the opposite arm outward. As this is done, the spine gently rotates from the lower back to the neck.
Regular practice of this pose can enhance spinal mobility, relieve hip tension, improve digestion, and activate the parasympathetic nervous system, making it one of the most therapeutically beneficial poses in both Hatha and traditional yoga.
If you are new to yoga or dealing with a medical condition, it is advisable to start under the guidance of a certified yoga instructor. Additionally, those with recent injuries or surgeries to the spine, hips, knees, or shoulders should avoid this pose.
