Bemina, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : Medical interns at the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Bemina have initiated a hunger strike to demand an increase in their monthly stipend. The interns, part of the 2021 MBBS batch, are insisting on a formal written order from the administration to address their concerns.
The protest escalated as the interns expressed frustration over the lack of official communication regarding their stipend. They noted that despite multiple discussions, there has been no concrete response from the authorities. “Our stance is clear; we will not end our protest until we receive a written order,” stated a representative of the interns.
The hunger strike is a continuation of a broader movement among MBBS and BDS interns in Jammu and Kashmir, who are advocating for their monthly stipend to be raised to ₹30,000. Currently, the stipend stands at ₹12,300, unchanged since 2019, despite rising inflation.
The protesting interns emphasized that their demands are rooted in the need for justice and fair compensation for their work and responsibilities. They urged the administration to promptly address the issue and provide a formal resolution to break the deadlock.
“We want dialogue. We want justice. We want a written order,” the interns reiterated. They clarified that the hunger strike aims to expedite the resolution process rather than halt negotiations.
The interns remain steadfast in their commitment, insisting that verbal assurances are no longer sufficient. They will continue their hunger strike until their demands are met with formal acknowledgment from the government.
