Essential Tips for Accurate Blood Pressure Measurement

New Delhi, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : High blood pressure, or hypertension, often develops without noticeable symptoms, leaving many unaware of their condition. This silent issue can lead to serious health complications, including heart disease, stroke, vision problems, and dementia. Regular blood pressure checks are crucial, but it’s important to avoid common mistakes that can lead to inaccurate readings.

The World Health Organization recently shared guidelines on social media platform X, emphasizing the importance of proper posture during measurement. Sit comfortably in a chair with your back well-supported. Keep both feet flat on the ground and avoid crossing your legs. The arm where the cuff is applied should rest on a table or support, ensuring that the cuff is at heart level.

Before taking a reading, relax for at least five minutes. Measuring blood pressure while rushing or moving can skew results. Additionally, refrain from talking during the measurement. If multiple readings are taken, remain quiet and still between them.

To obtain an accurate reading, it’s essential to avoid exercise, caffeine, and smoking for at least 30 minutes prior. These factors can significantly affect blood pressure levels and lead to misleading results.

Another common mistake is using an improperly sized cuff. Blood pressure cuffs come in various sizes, and it’s vital to choose one that fits your upper arm correctly. The cuff should cover at least 80% of the arm’s circumference and be at least 40% wide.

The cuff can be placed directly on bare skin or over a thin layer of clothing. Avoid folding clothing under the cuff, as this can interfere with the reading.

When recording your blood pressure, note the exact numbers displayed rather than rounding them for convenience. Regular checks are essential for all adults aged 18 and older to monitor their blood pressure effectively.
