Kolkata, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : In Kolkata, health officials have reported that West Bengal has recorded more than 500 new cases of dengue in the past week. A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) was issued on September 2 to monitor and control the outbreak. This led to an extensive campaign involving door-to-door surveillance and immediate blood tests for individuals exhibiting dengue symptoms.
An official noted that following this initiative, the state has seen over 500 new dengue cases in just seven days. With these recent reports, the total number of individuals affected by dengue this year has surpassed 4,500.
Murshidabad has emerged as the most impacted district, accounting for a significant portion of the new cases. Out of the approximately 500 new cases reported in the last week, 96 were from Murshidabad alone. This district has also recorded a total of 870 cases this year, out of the overall 4,500.
Kolkata ranks second, with a total of 402 cases reported this year, including 62 new cases in the past week. Health officials have indicated a consistent rise in dengue cases since April. According to data from the health department, the number of infections has escalated from 770 on April 30 to 1,946 by July 31, reaching 3,966 by August 31, and now exceeding 4,500.
Fortunately, health officials have assured that the current figures are accurate, with no underreporting or misclassification of dengue cases as “unknown fever.”
Earlier this year, the Chief Minister urged the public not to panic amid heavy rainfall contributing to the dengue situation. While acknowledging the seriousness of the outbreak, he emphasized that the current numbers are significantly lower compared to last year’s monsoon season.
