New Delhi, May 27: Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu has accused the Bhagwant Mann government of misusing administrative machinery in the electoral environment. He stated that the government is attempting to manipulate local elections through this misuse.
Speaking to reporters, Bittu expressed his reluctance to visit Dhuri, citing the enforcement of the election code of conduct, which he was fully aware of. He claimed that Dhuri, considered a stronghold of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, now appears to be weakening. Bittu noted that former OSD Omkar Singh is actively working on the ground for the Bharatiya Janata Party, creating a sense of panic within the Aam Aadmi Party.
He alleged that this panic has led to harassment of their supporters. Bittu mentioned that he left Delhi in the morning and continuously contacted police officials to inquire about the whereabouts of those who had been detained. He reported that the families of the detained individuals were quite distressed and were merely seeking permission to meet them. Initially, they were informed that the individuals had been taken from Dhuri to Sangrur, but upon reaching Sangrur, he learned they had been moved to another police station.
Bittu accused the police of frequently changing locations. However, he later received assurance from the SSP that local voters would be allowed to meet the detained individuals.
Defending the Election Commission, Ravneet Singh Bittu stated that it is an independent constitutional body and does not work for any single party. He accused the opposition of trying to spread confusion through the media, but asserted that the people of Punjab have become aware of these tactics.
He also raised the issue of illegal residents abroad and foreign nationals living illegally in India, arguing that if Canada and the USA can send back Indian nationals, India also has the right to expel those residing illegally.
Attacking the Aam Aadmi Party, Bittu remarked that its leaders make grand claims and comment on others, yet they should first reflect on their political history. He emphasized that he has never personally attacked anyone, as he has longstanding ties with many leaders’ families.
Regarding the SIR, Bittu stated that it would have minimal impact on votes in Punjab. He mentioned that those living abroad can prove their identity and eligibility by showing their visas and travel documents. According to him, unnecessary confusion is being spread regarding the removal of names from the voter list.
