Rare 2000-Year-Old Copper Plate Discovered in Chhattisgarh

Bilaspur, April 26: A remarkable discovery has been made in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, where a rare copper plate weighing over 3 kilograms has been unearthed from the residence of Sanjeev Pandey as part of the Gyan Bharatam initiative. This copper plate features inscriptions in Brahmi script and Pali language, dating back approximately 2000 years, making it historically invaluable.

Experts regard Brahmi script as one of the oldest writing systems in India, used from the Mauryan period for many centuries. The Pali language is primarily associated with Buddhist texts and teachings, enhancing the religious and cultural significance of this copper plate. Preliminary studies suggest that such copper plates were historically used for land grants, royal edicts, or religious proclamations.

Archaeologists and historians are particularly excited about this find. They believe that scientific testing and in-depth analysis of the copper plate could yield crucial insights into the social structure, administrative framework, and religious traditions of that era. This discovery not only highlights the historical richness of the Malhar region but could also serve as a significant heritage for the entire country.

Under the Gyan Bharatam initiative, the Ministry of Culture is actively engaged in the discovery and preservation of ancient manuscripts and heritage across the nation. This campaign encourages communities to safeguard and showcase their historical artifacts and manuscripts.

As part of this initiative, experts are identifying and digitizing these heritage items to ensure future generations remain connected to India’s rich knowledge tradition. The copper plate found in Malhar is considered a significant achievement in this direction, reinforcing efforts to preserve the country’s historical and cultural legacy.

Moreover, the digitization of manuscripts is being carried out to secure this heritage for future generations. This campaign is not only a crucial step towards the preservation of cultural heritage but also a powerful effort to revive the nation’s historical and intellectual wealth.
