Ramdas Athawale Calls for Permanent End to War Amid US-Iran Ceasefire

Mumbai, April 8: Central Minister Ramdas Athawale welcomed the two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran. However, he emphasized that this ceasefire should not be temporary; the war must be permanently ended.

Speaking to the media in Mumbai, Athawale stated, “I believe that the role of the Indian government, especially Prime Minister Modi, has always been to advocate for ceasefire and peace. Prime Minister Modi has engaged in discussions with several countries regarding this matter. The ceasefire initiative proposed by Trump should not be limited to just two weeks; it must be a permanent solution. Violence must cease. Stopping the war is essential, and it should be permanently resolved.”

On Wednesday, Athawale met with Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma. He noted their long-standing acquaintance and expressed pride in Varma’s appointment as the Governor of Maharashtra. “He has a deep understanding of political and social issues, particularly those concerning tribal communities and Dalits,” he added. Athawale visited to congratulate Varma on assuming office on behalf of the Republican Party of India.

During the meeting, he invited Varma to be the chief guest at the upcoming 80th anniversary of the ‘People’s Education Society,’ founded by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, and the ‘Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Award 2026’ ceremony. Additionally, Athawale presented a five-point demand letter from the Republican Party of India, addressing the interests of Dalits, marginalized, and oppressed communities in Maharashtra. Key demands included providing 500 square feet homes to slum dwellers, granting Scheduled Caste status to converted Buddhists, reinstating reservations in promotions, granting land ownership to the landless, and filling the backlog of vacant positions in government jobs immediately.
