Tensions Rise in Lakhimpur Kheri Following Ambedkar Statue Dispute

Mumbai, April 15: Tensions remain high in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, following a violent dispute over a statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The incident occurred in the Bankeganj area of the Mailani police station jurisdiction during a program held to commemorate Ambedkar’s birth anniversary.

Reports indicate that the situation escalated on Tuesday evening when news spread about the alleged damage to the statue. Local residents claimed that an unidentified individual had vandalized the statue, inciting public outrage. Protests quickly intensified, leading to a tense atmosphere.

The police stated that the installation of the statue had not received prior approval. This lack of permission prompted police objections, which further inflamed the crowd’s anger.

Additional Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar reported that during the Ambedkar Jayanti program, individuals attempted to install the statue. When police intervened due to the absence of permission, the crowd became agitated and began to riot. Protesters even hurled stones at the police. Officers attempted to calm the situation and disperse the crowd, and currently, the situation is under control.

Authorities noted that the enraged crowd vandalized several police vehicles and threw stones at officers. In response to the escalating situation, police forces from multiple stations were dispatched to the scene, along with senior officials.

As of now, a tense calm prevails in the area. Senior officials are closely monitoring the situation, and a heavy police presence has been deployed to maintain law and order and prevent any further incidents.
