New Delhi, August 21: Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is currently adopting an aggressive stance on electoral issues while also working to strengthen opposition alliances ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. He has attempted to elevate the issue of alleged police action against protesting students at Jantar Mantar into a significant political topic, taking it from Parliament to the streets.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has denied allegations of police brutality against students, citing a five-member committee formed by the Supreme Court to investigate the matter. Nevertheless, Rahul Gandhi continues to raise this issue, portraying Congress as a party committed to protecting democratic rights.
Congress’s strategy extends beyond just issues. The party views alliances with opposition parties as a crucial weapon to challenge the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the upcoming elections. After facing consecutive electoral defeats, both issues and alliances have become vital for Congress’s political survival.
Last year, during the Bihar assembly elections, Rahul Gandhi made the special intensive revision of the voter list a major electoral issue. However, the coalition partners in the Grand Alliance did not provide the expected support. The election results were disappointing for the opposition, with the NDA returning to power with an even larger majority.
With assembly elections approaching in several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Rahul Gandhi aims to leverage the student movement and alleged police actions as key political tools. Congress believes that emotionally charged issues related to youth can help galvanize public opinion against the government.
For a long time, Congress has struggled to convert its political legacy into votes. Continuous electoral losses have further weakened the party’s position. Consequently, the upcoming elections are seen as an opportunity not just to win seats but also to break the perception of ongoing defeats.
In line with this strategy, Congress is placing greater emphasis on coalition politics. Following the experiences in Bihar, the party has initiated steps to form coordination committees with its allies to ensure smooth collaboration on seat-sharing and electoral strategies, avoiding last-minute disputes.
Uttar Pradesh is considered one of the most crucial states for Congress. Once a dominant political force in the state, Congress has now been relegated to a limited role amid regional parties and the BJP. The party is trying to strengthen its political ground through issues like alleged police actions against students and irregularities in the Ram Janmabhoomi Trust.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Congress performed better than expected in Uttar Pradesh while allied with the Samajwadi Party. Now, the potential electoral partnership between Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav hopes to create an anti-incumbency atmosphere against the BJP, leveraging caste and social equations for improved performance in the upcoming elections.
