New Delhi, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to visit New Delhi this weekend to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit, marking his first trip to India in nearly seven years. The summit is scheduled for September 12-13, 2026.
During the summit, a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Xi is anticipated. The announcement of Xi’s attendance was made by China’s Foreign Ministry, confirming that he would join the summit at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi.
In a social media post, the ministry stated, “At the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the Republic of India, President Xi Jinping will attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi from September 12 to 13.”
This visit comes at a crucial time as India and China are working to stabilize their bilateral relations following the deadly clashes in Galwan in 2020. India has repeatedly emphasized the need for peace and stability in border areas as a fundamental condition for the continued development and progress of their relationship.
Recently, during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Bishkek, there was a brief exchange between Modi and Xi. Now, both leaders are expected to engage in more extensive bilateral discussions at the BRICS summit this weekend.
Meanwhile, the Chinese ambassador to India, Shu Fenghong, indicated that preparations for the meeting between Xi and Modi are underway. He suggested that China is committed to working with India to implement the strategic guidance provided by both leaders.
On social media platform X, Ambassador Fenghong stated, “China and India are arranging a bilateral meeting between President Xi and Prime Minister Modi. This will be the third consecutive year that both leaders will meet following their discussions in Kazan (Russia) and Tianjin (China).”
He further elaborated that China aims to collaborate with India to implement the strategic guidance from both leaders, manage bilateral relations with a long-term perspective, enhance dialogue, strengthen cooperation, resolve differences appropriately, and foster a friendship that supports each other’s successes.
Xi’s participation in the BRICS summit is expected to provide both parties an opportunity to discuss the broader direction of India-China relations, emphasizing the importance of ongoing dialogue and managing differences.
The summit will also include leaders from member and partner countries, along with invited guests, focusing on enhancing cooperation among the group and exchanging views on global and regional issues of mutual interest.
