Amritsar, May 20: Employees of Punjab Roadways have launched a protest against the government led by Bhagwant Mann. They stated that if they can contribute to forming this government, they can also campaign to bring it down. The workers warned Chief Minister Mann that if their demands are not met, they will escalate their protests.
The protests come at a crucial time, with state assembly elections scheduled for next year and the opposition targeting the Mann government on various issues. On Wednesday, Punjab Roadways employees staged a strong demonstration at the Central Bus Stand in Amritsar.
The workers are demanding the release of ten colleagues imprisoned in Sangrur Jail and the regularization of outsourced employees. During the protests, which are taking place simultaneously across all districts in Punjab, employees accused the government of failing to keep its promises.
Cashier Baljeet Singh stated, “We are protesting for the release of our ten colleagues who are currently in Sangrur Jail.” He added that the promises made by the Chief Minister before taking office have not been fulfilled even after four and a half years. The government had also assured the regularization of outsourced employees after ten years, which remains unaddressed. The employees had a meeting with Transport Minister Harpal Cheema on the 18th and warned that if their demands are not met, a three-day strike will be initiated.
The workers have issued a warning that if their demands are ignored, they will take strict measures. On July 25, buses will be parked in depots, and on July 26, a protest will be held demanding the Chief Minister’s resignation. If their demands continue to go unmet, they plan to campaign against the current government, which they claim has not fulfilled its promises.
Roadways employee Subhash Vaidya expressed, “Since this government came to power, we have been struggling continuously, but none of our demands have been met. If the government does not listen to us, we will expose its face in front of 5-6 lakh passengers.”
