Bengaluru, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has voiced strong opposition to a proposed documentary screening about Umar Khalid at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru. National General Secretary Virendra Singh Solanki emphasized that such a screening should be halted, especially while the related legal case is still pending in court.
Solanki questioned the appropriateness of showcasing a documentary about Khalid, who has been accused of raising anti-national slogans at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He expressed concern that the Karnataka government might be attempting to promote a narrative that could influence students inappropriately.
The ABVP has formally requested that local authorities in Bengaluru prevent the screening. Solanki stated that presenting a documentary about someone who is currently incarcerated on charges of sedition is unacceptable. He argued that it is inappropriate to portray Khalid positively, given the serious allegations against him.
In response to inquiries about Khalid’s status as an accused individual, Solanki maintained that it is the court’s role to determine that. He cautioned against using a documentary to potentially sway public opinion while the case is ongoing. Until the court reaches a decision, he insisted that no screenings should take place.
Solanki further suggested that if Khalid is later cleared of all charges, then a documentary could be considered for screening. However, if he is found guilty of the allegations, he asserted that there should be significant repercussions, including actions against those who produce the documentary.
The ABVP’s stance reflects a broader concern about the implications of such narratives within academic settings and the potential impact on student perspectives.
