Colombo, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh made a significant visit to the Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo on September 9, 2026, during his trip to Sri Lanka. He expressed his gratitude on the social media platform X, stating, “I had the privilege of visiting the sacred Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo and seeking the blessings of Lord Buddha. In a rapidly changing global environment, the eternal message of peace, brotherhood, and mutual understanding from Lord Buddha continues to guide us as we face various geopolitical challenges.”
Earlier in the day, Singh met with Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya. Their discussions centered on enhancing bilateral relations in key areas such as development cooperation, education, and culture. Singh shared insights on X, saying, “Today, I had a meeting with Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya in Colombo. We exchanged views on several issues related to development cooperation and the deep cultural and civilizational ties between India and Sri Lanka.” He emphasized the need for both nations, as allied democracies with a shared heritage, to work together towards a common vision for peace and prosperity in the region.
During his visit to the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defense, Singh also engaged with senior military leaders of the island nation. He noted on X, “During my visit to the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defense, I had the opportunity to interact with senior military leadership, many of whom have trained in India and have strong ties with us. In my brief remarks, I stressed the importance of a ‘blue economy’ vision for mutual and comprehensive development, reaffirming our desire to strengthen the longstanding defense and strategic partnership between India and Sri Lanka, with a particular focus on maritime cooperation.”
Singh also met with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, reiterating their commitment to work together for the welfare and development of both countries. During the meeting, Singh conveyed warm wishes from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed ways to ensure security, peace, and prosperity in the region. The meeting was attended by India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, and other officials.
Reflecting on the meeting, Singh remarked, “Today, I had a cordial and highly meaningful meeting with Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. I conveyed Prime Minister Modi’s best wishes and congratulated him on the successful completion of two years of his government.”
