Gandhinagar, May 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the ‘Somnath Amrit Mahotsav’ on Monday in Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district. This festival marks the 75th anniversary of the inauguration of the reconstructed Somnath Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The ceremonies held at the historic Somnath Temple commemorated its restoration and the inauguration by India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, in 1951. Before the religious events, PM Modi conducted a roadshow upon arriving in Somnath from Jamnagar. He had stayed overnight in Jamnagar after arriving in Gujarat on Sunday. The roadshow was attended by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi.
Thousands of people gathered along the approximately 1.5-kilometer route from the helipad to the Veer Hamirji Circle near the temple to welcome the Prime Minister. Supporters waved flags and chanted slogans as his convoy passed through the area. Artists from various states, including West Bengal, performed traditional cultural dances at designated spots along the route. Later, PM Modi participated in ceremonies held within the temple complex, which included special rituals and prayers as part of the festivities.
A ‘Kumbhabhishek’ ceremony was conducted using holy water brought from 11 sacred pilgrimage sites across the country. Amid Vedic chants and devotional prayers, the formal flag hoisting and traditional religious rituals were also performed.
PM Modi engaged in rituals such as water offerings, flag worship, and Mahapuja at the temple. During the ceremonies, helicopters showered flowers over the temple. The temple complex was lavishly decorated for the occasion, attracting a large number of devotees and dignitaries.
In anticipation of the Prime Minister’s visit and the expected crowd, security measures were tightened throughout the district. This celebration marks the 75th anniversary of the formal inauguration of the reconstructed temple after India gained independence. PM Modi will also address a public gathering at the Somnath Samvad Maidan.
