Bodhgaya, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : Preparations for the Pitripaksha Mela in Bodhgaya, Bihar, are in full swing as the event approaches. On September 9, Bihar Assembly Speaker Dr. Prem Kumar convened a review meeting with relevant officials at the Bodhgaya Guest House to discuss arrangements for the influx of pilgrims. Key topics included electricity, drinking water, sanitation, traffic management, parking, lighting, roads, toilets, and environmental protection.
Dr. Kumar emphasized that a significant number of devotees from across India and abroad visit Bodhgaya during this period, with approximately 2,000 to 3,000 pilgrims arriving daily from South India alone. He urged all departments to coordinate effectively and instructed officials to ensure a steady supply of electricity throughout the festival.
During the meeting, officials reported ongoing repairs to lighting facilities and shared updates on land-related matters, stating that work on land records is being expedited with a goal to complete remaining tasks within a month. Additionally, three dismil plots of land have been allocated for housing construction for 73 landless poor families.
The Speaker also inquired about the construction of pavements and access paths near the Saraswati Vedi, as well as repairs to damaged stairs at the Dharmaranya Vedi. He stressed the importance of increasing greenery through tree planting initiatives.
City council officials announced that a special team would be deployed to ensure cleanliness from the airport to the Mahabodhi Temple. Approximately 400 sanitation workers are currently active within the municipal area. Parking arrangements have been established at Kalachakra Maidan, with designated areas for small vehicles, large vehicles, and VIPs.
A review of drinking water and sewage projects was also conducted. Approximately 3,000 homes are receiving Ganga water for drinking, while plans are underway to provide similar access to around 6,000 additional homes at an estimated cost of ₹135 crore. Construction of a sewage treatment plant (STP) with a budget of ₹100 crore is ongoing, along with plans to install public toilets at ten locations between the airport and the Mahabodhi Temple.
Dr. Kumar instructed action to address issues related to beggars and stray animals around the Mahabodhi Temple. He proposed creating a Toto-tempo stand in the Dumuhan area to alleviate traffic congestion and suggested leveling government land for parking development.
He reiterated the importance of enhancing facilities for the millions of pilgrims expected to attend the globally recognized Pitripaksha Mela, scheduled from September 25 to October 10 this year. The event is expected to draw a tremendous number of visitors from various parts of the world.
