Mumbai, June 18: In the evolving digital landscape, actress Preity Zinta has approached the Bombay High Court regarding the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI). She has accused major online platforms like Meta and Google of creating and disseminating fake images and content of her without permission, which has harmed her reputation.
In her petition, Zinta stated that her name and identity have been misappropriated, violating her personality rights. She claimed that AI-generated content has been widely circulated on these platforms, leading to potential misunderstandings as people may mistake it for authentic material.
The actress further asserted that her moral rights under the Copyright Act of 1957 have also been infringed. The unauthorized use of her image and identity is legally questionable. The Bombay High Court, led by Justice Abhay Ahuja, has allowed her to proceed with the lawsuit.
The court noted that the offices of the involved online companies are located in various cities and countries, which might extend the jurisdictional reach of the case. Nevertheless, the court will hear the matter and deliver a comprehensive ruling.
In recent years, the rise of AI technology has led to an increase in incidents where celebrities’ images, videos, and voices are misused.
Several prominent Bollywood stars have previously sought legal recourse in similar cases, including Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Arjun Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Salman Khan, R. Madhavan, Hrithik Roshan, and Vivek Oberoi. In these instances, courts have recognized the need to protect their identities and images, granting them legal safeguards.
