Yangon, March 12: The Indian U-17 women’s football team secured a 2-0 victory over Myanmar in a friendly match held at Thuwunna Stadium on Thursday. Preetika Barman was the standout player, scoring both goals for India. The two teams will meet again for a second friendly match on March 14.
This friendly match is part of India’s preparations for the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup, scheduled to take place in Suzhou, China, from May 1 to May 17. Myanmar, which has already qualified for the continental tournament, is using these matches to strengthen its own preparations.
India displayed a balanced performance, scoring one goal in each half. Goalkeeper Munni made crucial saves when needed, while the defense, led by Abhista Basnet and Elizabeth Lakra, appeared organized and composed throughout the match.
The Young Tigresses started the match strongly, trying to apply pressure with controlled possession and calculated attacks. However, Myanmar also showed aggression in the first half, attempting to disrupt India’s rhythm, but India gradually gained control of the match.
In the 31st minute, Indian captain Julan Nongmaithem passed to Alisha Lingdoh on the left flank. The left-back delivered a teasing cross into the box, but Pearl Fernandes failed to direct her header on target.
India broke the deadlock in the 38th minute with a well-executed move. After winning possession near the center circle, Redima Devi Chingkhama fed a precise through ball to Preetika Barman. The winger showed patience, deceiving Myanmar’s goalkeeper Saung Pwint Phyu before slotting the ball into an empty net, giving India a 1-0 lead before halftime.
While Myanmar showed some resilience in the first half, India took complete control in the second half. Coach Pamela Kanti’s team increased their pace and began to dominate possession, pushing Myanmar deeper into their own half.
Just four minutes into the second half, India doubled their lead. Alva Devi Senjam sprinted down the left wing and sent a brilliant cross into the penalty area. The delivery split Myanmar’s defense, allowing Preetika Barman to find the net once again.
This goal solidified India’s advantage. They continued to control the game, and in the 60th minute, Abhista took a free-kick from over 30 yards, which struck the crossbar. Despite missing that opportunity, India maintained their grip on the match. Their disciplined defending and effective ball movement kept Myanmar at bay, allowing the visitors to comfortably secure the win.
