According to The New York Times, the Drake Passage is a water body between the southern tip of South America and Antarctica. The US Tsunami Warning System did not issue any alert following the earthquake. However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued a brief warning for Chile, stating that dangerous tsunami waves could reach some Chilean coasts within three hours of the Drake Passage earthquake.

The USGS reported that the earthquake occurred at 11:16 pm Argentina time, at a depth of six miles from the coasts of Chile and Argentina. Upon receiving the alert, the Chilean government issued a tsunami warning for some of its bases in Antarctica. The National Tsunami Warning Center stated that the risk of a tsunami in the United States is very low. The USGS revised its initial reading of magnitude 8 to 7.5.

According to ABC News, the earthquake struck the Drake Passage at 11:16 pm local time, about 710 kilometres (441 miles) southeast of Ushuaia, Argentina. The initial depth of the earthquake was 10.8 kilometres (6.7 miles). The Drake Passage connects the South Atlantic and South Pacific Oceans between the southern tip of South America and the Antarctic Peninsula. This area is extremely remote. So far, there are no reports of damage or casualties.

Hurricane Erin: According to another report from The New York Times, Hurricane Erin is causing strong waves in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, USA. In this context, New York City authorities have extended the swimming ban. Swimming was earlier prohibited at New York’s beaches on Wednesday and Thursday, and this ban will now remain in place on Friday as well.

Hurricane Erin is located about 285 miles east of North Carolina’s Outer Banks and is moving northeast through the Atlantic Ocean. A warning for high waves—up to four feet—has been issued for the Outer Banks. A coastal flood warning is in effect from Carolina to coastal Connecticut. It is said that as Hurricane Erin moves away from the eastern coast over the next 24 hours, it will weaken, but its coastal impact—especially in the northeast—will continue through Friday and possibly Saturday.
