Chennai, May 7: Following the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, no party has secured a clear majority. Vijay, the actor-turned-politician, is actively working to gather support for his party, Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), to form the government.
With 108 seats won in the 234-member assembly, TVK has emerged as the largest party. After receiving support from Congress, the coalition’s total has reached 112 legislators. However, the party still falls short by six seats to achieve the necessary majority of 118.
In the midst of ongoing political uncertainty regarding government formation, Vijay met with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Tuesday to present his claim to form a government. Reports indicate that the Governor informed him that an invitation to form a government would only be extended after proving adequate numbers.
On Wednesday, Vijay met the Governor again, with the meeting lasting over 40 minutes. Following the discussion, a statement from the Raj Bhavan revealed that Vijay acknowledged TVK currently lacks the numbers required to form a government independently.
In efforts to secure a majority, TVK leaders intensified discussions with various political parties on Wednesday. The party’s General Secretary, CTR Nirmal Kumar, met with state secretaries of leftist parties to seek their support. Additionally, TVK representatives Arunraj and Mustafa approached Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) National President Kader Mohideen for backing.
After the meeting, Kader Mohideen told reporters that TVK had formally reached out to his party. He stated that as the leader of the largest party, Vijay has every democratic right to claim the formation of a government.
However, Mohideen also clarified that IUML would consult with DMK President M.K. Stalin before making a final decision. He remarked, “We have been part of the DMK alliance for nearly 30 years. Any political decision will be made after discussions with DMK leadership.”
To reach a majority, TVK needs the support of at least six more legislators. The leftist parties and IUML collectively hold six seats, making them crucial players in Vijay’s quest for power.
Meanwhile, CTR Nirmal Kumar confirmed that TVK will not seek support from the BJP-led NDA alliance and ruled out any possibility of an alliance with the saffron party.
