Mumbai, June 30: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made a significant move in a high-profile murder case linked to post-election violence in West Bengal. Khalid-uz-Zaman, a declared absconder, was apprehended in a remote area of Yetala village in Nanded district, Maharashtra.
This operation took place on Monday. Khalid had been on the run since the case was registered in 2021 and had never appeared before the investigative agency or participated in ongoing court proceedings. His arrest had been a long-standing objective for the CBI.
The CBI registered the case on September 1, 2021, following an order from the Calcutta High Court on August 19, 2021. The investigation began based on an FIR filed at the Duttapukur police station in West Bengal. The case pertains to the murder of Hasnur Zaman on May 3, 2021, in the village of North Kulsara, which was linked to incidents of violence following the elections.
During the extensive investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet and a supplementary charge sheet against a total of 13 accused, including Khalid-uz-Zaman, between 2021 and 2022. However, Khalid remained elusive, leading to his declaration as a proclaimed offender.
According to the CBI, the arrested individual was presented on Monday before a competent court in Dharmabad, Maharashtra, for transit remand. After receiving the transit remand, he will be brought to West Bengal, where he will be presented in the court of the additional sessions judge in Barasat. The agency believes that Khalid’s arrest will significantly aid in advancing the judicial process related to this case of post-election violence.
