Chennai, May 9: The political turmoil surrounding the formation of a new government in Tamil Nadu has intensified. Speculations about the imposition of President’s Rule are growing, as there is still no clear picture regarding the government formation. Allegations of horse-trading, fake support letters, and claims of ‘missing’ legislators have complicated the state’s political landscape.
The current government’s term ends on May 10, yet it remains uncertain who will form the next government. Meanwhile, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has made it clear that no party will be invited to form a government without proving the support of at least 118 legislators in the 234-member assembly.
In the assembly elections held on April 23, actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, TVK, emerged as the largest party, winning 108 seats. However, it still falls short of the majority required.
The DMK alliance secured 73 seats, while the AIADMK alliance won 53 seats. To gather a majority, TVK has initiated talks with Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), CPI, and CPI (M). With the support of five Congress legislators, TVK’s count reached 113. Subsequently, CPI and CPI (M) also announced unconditional external support, increasing the number to 117.
However, complications arose as Vijay won from two seats and may have to vacate one. This could further reduce their effective number, leaving TVK still short of a majority. There are hopes for VCK’s support, but uncertainty remains regarding the final numbers.
The political crisis deepened late Friday night when AMMK General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran unexpectedly visited the Raj Bhavan and met with the Governor. He accused TVK leaders of large-scale horse-trading. The controversy centered around AMMK-supported legislator S. Kamaraj, who was allegedly identified as a TVK supporter.
Dhinakaran claimed that fake support letters were sent to the Governor via WhatsApp and that Kamaraj is ‘missing.’ However, shortly after, Kamaraj appeared with Dhinakaran before the media, stating that he had not officially supported TVK and accused them of misusing his signature.
Following this, Dhinakaran filed a police complaint regarding the alleged fraud. On the other hand, TVK dismissed these allegations, releasing a video showing Kamaraj allegedly signing the support letter voluntarily. TVK accused Dhinakaran of spreading misinformation to prevent Vijay’s government from forming.
Political analysts believe that if this deadlock continues and allegations of horse-trading escalate, the Governor may report a constitutional crisis to the central government. In such a scenario, the path to imposing President’s Rule in Tamil Nadu could open up. With less than 48 hours remaining until the current government’s term ends, intense political negotiations are ongoing in Chennai.
