Dhubri, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for a significant thermal power project in Chapar, Dhubri district, on September 20. The Adani Power Limited facility will boast a capacity of 3,200 megawatts and represents one of the largest private investments in the state’s history, amounting to approximately ₹48,000 crore.
This ambitious project is expected to significantly boost Assam’s electricity production capacity and create numerous job opportunities. According to the company, the construction phase could generate up to 20,000 jobs, while the operational plant will provide around 5,000 permanent and indirect jobs.
The foundation-laying ceremony was attended by senior state officials, industry representatives, community leaders, and Adani Group Director Jit Adani. The Chapar thermal power project is a crucial component of Adani Group’s larger investment strategy in Assam, which totals ₹63,000 crore in the power sector.
The plant is set to be commissioned in phases starting in December 2030 and will include four units of 800 megawatts each. It will utilize ultra-supercritical technology, designed to enhance efficiency while adhering to modern environmental safety standards.
In his address, Chief Minister Sarma highlighted Assam’s emergence as an energy hub for the Northeast, noting that several major energy projects are currently underway. He described the Chapar project as a significant outcome of the investment commitments made during the ‘Advantage Assam Investor Summit 2.0.’
Sarma remarked, “With an investment of nearly ₹48,000 crore, this project will be one of the largest single investments ever made in Assam.”
Jit Adani emphasized that this thermal power project marks the beginning of a new chapter in Assam’s development journey. He stated, “This project will create jobs and open opportunities for local contractors, suppliers, and businesses. We take pride in investing in Assam and being part of the state’s economic progress.”
He also mentioned that the group’s substantial plans in the state include investments exceeding ₹80,000 crore in sectors such as power, aviation, and cement, all of which are already taking shape on the ground.
