Political Showdown in Bhopal: Congress Challenges BJP on Womens Reservation Bill

Bhopal, April 25: A significant political confrontation is anticipated in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly during a special one-day session on April 27. The opposition Congress party is gearing up to challenge the BJP government’s stance on the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ (Women’s Reservation Act).

Ahead of the session, Congress has convened a meeting of its legislators to solidify its strategy and ensure coordinated responses within the House. This meeting will take place at 9:00 AM at the residence of the Leader of the Opposition in Bhopal.

Leader of the Opposition, Umang Singhar, expressed concerns on Saturday regarding the BJP government’s intentions about women’s reservation. He accused the ruling party of dragging its feet on the issue through procedural delays.

Singhar stated that Congress will vigorously raise this matter during the session, demanding clarity on the timeline and implementation process. According to party sources, Congress is likely to question the delays in implementing the 33% reservation for women and highlight alleged inconsistencies in the BJP’s stance at both the central and state levels.

He emphasized that if the reservation is implemented within the current 543 Lok Sabha seats, the party is ready to support it. However, they will oppose any measures that could delay its implementation.

This special session was called shortly after the lower house failed to secure the necessary two-thirds majority for a constitutional amendment bill related to women’s reservation and the expansion of Lok Sabha seats on April 17. The bill received 298 votes in favor and 230 against, falling short of the required 352 votes.

In response to this development, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav criticized Congress for not supporting the bill and announced the special session to discuss women’s issues in the state assembly.

According to the official notification, the assembly will meet in two sessions: from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM and from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM, unless directed otherwise by the Speaker. The agenda includes discussions on ‘Nari Shakti Vandan – Comprehensive Development and Empowerment of Women.’

As both parties prepare to present their arguments, this session is expected to revolve around women’s reservation, the implementation process, and the contrasting viewpoints put forth by the BJP and Congress, leading to a broader political and policy debate.
