New Delhi, March 16: The Election Commission announced the schedule for assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry on Sunday. Following this announcement, political parties have ramped up their rhetoric.
In Tamil Nadu, BJP state president Nainar Nagendran targeted the DMK, claiming they will rely on money and administrative power to win the elections. He accused Deputy Chief Minister Udayanidhi Stalin of wanting to become Chief Minister through new financial allocations. Nagendran pointed out that the government has not appointed a regular DGP, and drug trafficking continues unabated. He also alleged that names of deceased individuals have been included in the voter list through state officials.
AIADMK Rajya Sabha MP I.S. Inbadurai urged the Election Commission to remove hoardings placed by the Tamil Nadu government featuring the Chief Minister and his son Udayanidhi Stalin. He stated that these hoardings are visible everywhere and should be banned.
AMMK General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran claimed that their party is like Duryodhana, while they are as strong as the Pandavas. He expressed confidence that they would win alongside the NDA and form a government for the people.
G.K. Vasan, president of the Tamil Manila Congress, referred to the NDA-AIADMK alliance as the winning team in Tamil Nadu and announced plans for intensified campaigning.
I.S. Inbadurai reiterated that their alliance would secure a majority in the government.
AMMK spokesperson C.R. Saraswati noted that the NDA is performing well and that a seat-sharing announcement would come soon. She acknowledged that while the DMK appears strong, the Indy alliance is also gaining traction, but public dissatisfaction regarding law and order issues persists.
In West Bengal, TMC MP Prakash Chik Baraik stated that voting will occur in two phases (April 23 and 29). They are prepared to campaign door-to-door on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s initiatives for the poor. Approximately 60 lakh names are under consideration, and they trust the Supreme Court.
In Assam, Minister Jayant Malla Barua expressed gratitude to the ECI, stating that the people of Assam have been eagerly awaiting the elections. They are ready for the festival of democracy.
AIUDF leader Rafiqul Islam mentioned that elections will take place in one phase on April 9 and that preparations are underway as time is limited.
Punjab’s Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema from Chandigarh confirmed that elections will occur on schedule, but criticized the BJP for claiming that many votes were canceled in Bengal, which he deemed unacceptable.
Congress MP Manish Tewari stated that they will fight with full strength, as public dissatisfaction with the current government is rising, which will be reflected in the results.
Earlier, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar announced in a press conference that voting in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry will occur in one phase on April 9. Tamil Nadu will also have voting in one phase on April 23, while West Bengal will have voting in two phases on April 23 and 29. Results from all states will be declared together on May 4.
