New Delhi, July 30: France and Spain are currently battling devastating wildfires, with support coming from Romania, Greece, and Poland. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, praised the solidarity shown by these nations.
In a post on the social media platform X, President von der Leyen stated, “The wildfires in France and Spain continue to wreak havoc, but during these challenging times, Europe’s unity is emerging strongly. Romania and Greece have decided to advance their relief efforts and will continue to assist the affected areas.”
President von der Leyen also announced that Poland will join the relief campaign starting Saturday. She expressed heartfelt gratitude for everyone’s courage, dedication, and assistance.
In Spain’s Castellón province, the wildfire in the Val d’Uixó area remains uncontrolled, affecting approximately 10,000 hectares. Meanwhile, in France, the government has heightened its alert due to rising temperatures, prompting Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to cancel his vacation to monitor the crisis.
According to Spanish media, the wildfire in the Val d’Uixó region has spread across about 10,000 hectares and has impacted nearly 81 kilometers. In light of the fire threat, around 10,000 people have been evacuated to safer locations. Spain’s public broadcaster RTVE reported that the fire in Val d’Uixó is still out of control, with firefighting teams working tirelessly to contain it.
Firefighting operations are ongoing in several areas, including Madrid, Ávila, Toledo, Castellón, and Almería. The biggest challenge for officials is to prevent the fire from reigniting amid a new heatwave.
