New Delhi, August 15: India is celebrating its 80th Independence Day. On this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the national flag at the Red Fort and addressed the nation. In his speech, PM Modi emphasized the potential of sports in the country, the government’s future plans for athletics, and reaffirmed India’s commitment to host the 2036 Olympics.
PM Modi stated, “I have said before that those who play will flourish. India is making its mark in the world of sports. Now, the national anthem of India resonates on the sports podium. The tricolor waves proudly. The TOPS scheme has achieved significant success. India excels in various sports initiatives, including the Khelo India Games, University Games, Winter Games, Beach Games, sports infrastructure, coaching, sports medicine, and nutrition for athletes.”
He added, “A vast field is opening up for the youth. The number of medals for India is steadily increasing. We are progressing as strong contenders for the Olympics in 2026. In 2030, India will host the Commonwealth Games. There are 40 types of Olympic sports worldwide, with around 325 to 350 competitions. We do not participate in two-thirds of these events. We fail to qualify.”
The Prime Minister urged the youth, stating, “We are bidding to host the Olympics in 2036. I want us to focus on the sports in which we fail to qualify. To achieve this, we want to launch a ‘Talent Hunt’ initiative. This campaign will search for talent among children aged 5 to 15 in villages, towns, and schools. We will identify talent and then train these children to develop them into the country’s top athletes.”
