New Delhi, June 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his sorrow over the tragic incident in the Taratala area of Kolkata. According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), he announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased. Additionally, the injured will receive ₹50,000 each.
PM Modi described the accident that occurred on Wednesday in Kolkata as heartbreaking. The families of those who lost their lives will receive the ex gratia amount from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. He emphasized that the state government is working tirelessly around the clock to ensure that affected individuals receive all possible assistance.
It is reported that the roof of an under-construction warehouse collapsed in the Taratala area of Kolkata, resulting in the confirmed deaths of seven people. Over 20 hours after the incident, rescue and relief operations are still ongoing. On Thursday morning, two more bodies were recovered from the debris, raising the death toll to seven.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are actively engaged in rescue efforts at the site. Manish Ranjan, the commander of the second battalion of NDRF, stated that 16 individuals have been safely rescued so far. Additionally, five unconscious individuals were also extracted from the collapsed structure.
Ranjan noted that the rescue operation is quite challenging due to the multiple layers of concrete, iron rods, girders, and tin sheets in the collapsed structure, making access to the debris extremely difficult.
In connection with this incident, police have arrested the warehouse owner, Shambhunath Bahra. In total, three individuals have been apprehended as part of the investigation, which is ongoing.
