Mumbai, July 30: Heavy rainfall in the catchment area of Maharashtra’s Koyna Dam has led to a rapid increase in water levels. To manage this, six radial gates of the dam will be opened at 5 PM on Thursday, releasing 5,079 cubic feet of water into the Koyna River.
Currently, one unit of the Koyna Dam’s power station is operational, discharging 1,050 cubic feet of water. This will result in a total flow of 6,129 cubic feet into the Koyna River. Authorities have indicated that the water release may be adjusted further based on rainfall intensity and inflow into the dam.
Due to the expected rise in the Koyna River’s water level, officials have urged residents living along the riverbanks to remain vigilant and avoid entering the water. Village administrations and relevant departments along the riverbanks have been instructed to take necessary precautions and monitor the situation closely.
Meanwhile, the Girna Dam, considered a lifeline for half of Jalgaon district, has also seen an increase in water levels. As of Thursday morning, the dam was 94% full, with approximately 3,000 cubic feet of water inflow. This raises concerns about the dam reaching its full capacity and potentially overflowing.
On July 22, the water storage in the Girna Dam was only 40.38%. However, due to heavy rainfall in the upper regions, the water level has surged by 54% in just eight days. This has provided relief to farmers and residents in Bhivpur, Pachora, Chalisgaon, and Jalgaon talukas, who rely on the Girna project. If the dam overflows, a decision may be made to release water from it.
