New Delhi, July 30: The Supreme Court has addressed a petition regarding the use of pellet guns against protesters during a march to Parliament in Delhi. On Thursday, the court issued a notice to the central government, directing them to ensure proper medical treatment for those injured by pellet guns.
The Supreme Court ordered the government to maintain a complete record of the weapons and ammunition used by the Rapid Action Force (RAF) during the protests at Jantar Mantar against the NEET paper leak. Additionally, the court mandated that all victims injured by pellets receive comprehensive medical care.
During the hearing on Thursday, the Supreme Court inquired about the standard operating procedures (SOP) for the use of pellet guns. The court issued a notice to the government, seeking a response on this matter.
Furthermore, the Supreme Court instructed the petitioner to amend their request for a ban on pellet guns. The petition seeks to prohibit the use of pellet guns altogether.
The bench, comprising Chief Justice (CJI) Suryakant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohana, was hearing the petition filed by retired Intelligence Bureau Special Director Yashovardhan Azad and two others, Prashant Kumar Singh and Sheikh Irshad Mansuri.
The petition calls for compensation for all victims injured by pellets during the police action at Jantar Mantar on July 20, as well as for their medical treatment. It argues that using pellet guns to disperse a peaceful crowd is unjustifiable, as it is unconstitutional and fails to meet the standards of reasonableness.
