Nice, June 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi described his recent discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron as highly productive. The talks focused on enhancing cooperation in several key areas.
In a post on the social media platform X, PM Modi stated, “Today’s meeting with my friend President Macron was very beneficial. Given our long-standing friendship, we have decided to elevate our relationship to a distinct comprehensive strategic partnership. Our discussions centered on deepening collaboration in defense, technology, space, security, counter-terrorism, and innovation.”
In another post, he emphasized, “India and France will continue to work together to strengthen our economic ties. The India-EU free trade agreement will significantly boost this effort. We are also initiating a dialogue on economic security to enhance supply chains for essential minerals and technology. Health and education are other sectors where we will collaborate.”
President Macron shared a selfie with PM Modi, captioning it with “Nice.” PM Modi reshared it, stating, “It was a pleasure meeting you in Nice. The first phase of the visit was highly successful and meaningful. The India-France partnership will reach new heights. See you in Avignon and Paris.”
Following their meeting in Nice, a joint statement was released, calling for the swift implementation of the India-EU free trade agreement, which presents a significant opportunity to boost mutual trade and investment. The leaders also discussed ways to enhance cooperation in SMEs, aviation, and railways. They welcomed the agreement to establish a Center of Excellence for aeronautics skills in Kanpur. Both leaders agreed on strengthening supply chains, particularly for essential minerals, while welcoming the initiation of a dialogue on economic security.
The statement further noted that the leaders discussed ways to enhance collaboration with the private sector in space. They highlighted that India’s “Peace Act” creates new opportunities for cooperation, including small and advanced modular reactors.
Recognizing the vital role of innovation and technology in India-France relations, both sides adopted the “Innovation Roadmap 2030” to guide their partnership in the long term. Additionally, they agreed to establish a joint India-France AI working group to enhance cooperation in artificial intelligence.
The joint inauguration of India Innovates in Nice and PM Modi’s upcoming participation in the “VivaTech” event in Paris have further strengthened the partnership between India and France in sectors such as deep tech, semiconductors, agri-tech, med-tech, renewable energy, defense, and space.
