New Delhi, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian government announced on September 14, 2026, that the wholesale price index (WPI) inflation for August 2026 reached 9.92%, a slight increase from July’s 9.78%.
According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the WPI for all commodities in August stood at 110.8, compared to 110.0 in July. The data indicates that rising prices of primary goods, fuel and energy, and manufactured products significantly impacted overall inflation.
Inflation in the fuel and energy category surged to 22.93% in August, up from 20.05% in July. This increase is largely attributed to the recent spike in international crude oil prices.
In contrast, inflation for primary goods decreased to 7.76% in August from 8.52% in July. Meanwhile, inflation for manufactured products saw a slight rise to 8.37%, up from 8.29% the previous month.
The index for primary goods was recorded at 118.1, fuel and energy at 108.3, and manufactured products at 108.8 in August, compared to 117.2, 105.4, and 108.4 in July, respectively.
The WPI food index-based inflation also increased to 7.05% in August, up from 6.65% in July, indicating persistent pressure on food prices.
Key contributors to the rise in wholesale inflation in August included mineral oils (including petroleum products), food items, the manufacturing of food products, basic metals, non-food items, and the production of chemicals and chemical products.
Additionally, the government revised the final figures for June 2026. The WPI index for June was adjusted from a provisional estimate of 110.2 to 110.3. Consequently, the final wholesale inflation figure for June has been revised from 9.87% to 9.97%.
For August 2026, the input producer price index (input PPI) for the manufacturing sector was reported at 104.2. The provisional estimate for June’s input PPI was revised from 107.1 to 105.9.
