Seemapuri, New Delhi, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic incident occurred in Seemapuri, New Delhi, where a four-story building collapsed, resulting in the deaths of five individuals, including two children. This disaster prompted the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to take swift action against illegal constructions in the area just two days later.
Under the directive of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the MCD launched a demolition campaign targeting buildings constructed in violation of government regulations. This operation is part of an ongoing effort to eliminate illegal structures in the vicinity.
Rajendra Prasad Meena, the Deputy Commissioner of Police for Shahdara, reported that a nearby building had already been declared dangerous prior to the collapse. When the building fell, it struck the adjacent structure, damaging its balcony and walls. The MCD issued a notice to the owner, granting just two hours to begin the demolition. Police provided security to facilitate the operation.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the collapse, and efforts are underway to locate the building’s owner, who is currently at large.
The victims of Wednesday’s tragedy have been identified as a 12-year-old girl, 21-year-old Gulafsha, who was four months pregnant, a toddler approximately one and a half years old, and two other women, Nusrat, also known as Gudiya, and Hazra Bibi. Eight individuals injured in the incident were rescued and taken to the Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital in Tahirpur for treatment.
DCP Meena confirmed that the rescue operation was completed by 2 PM on Thursday. The building collapse occurred in the Satya Niketan area of Delhi, where the structure primarily housed paying guests, many of whom were students from Delhi University.
In the wake of this tragedy, the MCD has intensified its campaign to identify and demolish dilapidated buildings across the national capital.
