Opposition Intensifies Demands for Chief Election Commissioner’s Resignation Amid Protests

New Delhi, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : The opposition in India has ramped up its demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, the protests have gained momentum in the Lok Sabha. A delegation of ten opposition MPs recently met with President Droupadi Murmu to voice their concerns. In anticipation of further demonstrations, security has been heightened around key areas in Delhi, including India Gate and Connaught Place.

Congress MP Kumari Selja raised concerns about police presence and barricades that were used to prevent opposition members from reaching their intended protests. She questioned why the Election Commission is avoiding meetings with elected representatives. During their planned demonstration, opposition MPs were halted outside the Akashvani Bhawan, leading to further scrutiny of the Commission’s reluctance to engage.

Selja emphasized that if MPs are obstructed by heavy police presence, there must be a clear reason behind it. She accused the central government of suppressing democratic voices across the nation.

Former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Bhupesh Baghel, noted that the protests led by Rahul Gandhi and the INDIA alliance have been ongoing for four days. He asserted that this movement is not slowing down and may intensify in the coming days. Baghel warned that the protests could spread rapidly as the opposition continues to fight for their demands.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi stated that the opposition is taking to the streets to protect the voting rights of citizens. He clarified that this struggle is not just for those who support the opposition’s ideology but also for those who criticize it.

Gogoi commended the protesters for standing up for democracy and citizens’ rights. Meanwhile, Congress MP Pawan Khera mentioned that the opposition MPs plan to submit a memorandum to the President. He expressed hope that President Murmu would take appropriate action to uphold the Constitution, as the opposition seeks justice.

Varsha Gaikwad, commenting on the meeting between the INDIA bloc leaders and President Murmu, noted that the President serves as a guardian for all MPs. She claimed that nearly 300 MPs have consistently demanded the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner for four consecutive days.

Gaikwad alleged that voters are being deprived of their rights, raising serious concerns about vote theft. The opposition intends to present its worries to the President, hoping for a favorable resolution.

Congress MP Imran Masood emphasized that the protests will continue across various parts of the country. He questioned how long the government can suppress dissent and insisted that both the Chief Election Commissioner and the current government must step down.

Samajwadi Party MP Jiya-ur-Rehman Bark stated that all opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party, are united and fully committed to this issue, which is central to the public. He mentioned that they have requested a meeting with the President to discuss the demand for the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation.

Congress leader Danish Ali asserted that the INDIA alliance is fighting to protect the country’s democracy and Constitution. He emphasized that their struggle will persist from the streets to Parliament and ultimately to the President’s office until Gyanesh Kumar is removed from the Election Commission.

Samajwadi Party MP Ikra Hasan questioned the need for extensive security measures when no incidents have occurred, suggesting that the BJP is acting out of fear. She argued that when a government becomes fearful of its own citizens, it signals the beginning of its decline.
