Islamabad, April 4: The internal situation in Pakistan is spiraling out of control amid claims of mediation between Iran and the US-Israel. Citizens are distressed due to rising petrol and diesel prices. Opposition parties and civil society groups are vocally demanding the resignation of the Sharif government in support of the public.
The opposition has ramped up calls for the removal of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s coalition government. Salman Akram Raja, the Secretary-General of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), called for a “mass revolution” on Friday to oust the government. He criticized the record fuel price hikes as “unjust and favoring the wealthy.” Meanwhile, the radical Islamic party, Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, announced nationwide protests.
Addressing the media at the Lahore Press Club, Raja expressed concern, stating that the country has entered a “very dark phase,” urging citizens to take to the streets to remove the ruling coalition. According to the Pakistani newspaper Dawn, he emphasized the need for a revolution and the ousting of the current government, which he claims seized power through manipulated referendum results.
Raja dismissed the government’s assertion that the recent spike in petroleum prices was due to global tensions, stating, “Linking the surge in fuel prices to the US-Iran conflict is nonsense.” He accused the Pakistani government of exploiting citizens while lavishly spending on luxury vehicles and perks for administrative and military officials.
He remarked, “In any country, democracy directly supports the poor, the weak, and the voiceless. Here, it has been deliberately usurped, the rights of the people have been stripped away, and trade unions have been silenced. Where politics is not alive, the weak and poor cannot raise their voices.”
In another speech, Jamaat-e-Islami leader Hafiz Naeemur Rehman announced nationwide protests against the fuel price hikes, threatening an indefinite strike if the government does not reverse its decision.
During a conference in Lahore, Rehman stated, “The government must immediately retract this brutal and illogical increase, or there will be a nationwide movement that they must be prepared to face.” He urged citizens to be ready for strikes across Pakistan, warning that if their demands are ignored, they would surround the homes of chief ministers in all four provinces.
On Friday, the Pakistan Human Rights Council (HRC) protested against the fuel price hikes at the Karachi Press Club, labeling them “unjust” and warning of increased financial burdens on the public.
According to the human rights body, a significant number of citizens, civil society members, and activists participated in the protest, expressing serious concerns over the continuous rise in fuel prices and its direct impact on inflation and living costs.
The HRC stated, “Speakers unanimously called for the government to take immediate steps to control inflation and provide relief to the public. They warned that if anti-people measures continue, the public will become more vocal against the government.”
