Guwahati, April 9: In a historic turnout, Assam recorded an impressive 85.38% voter participation in the 2026 assembly elections, according to the Election Commission of India. This remarkable figure surpasses the previous record of 84.67% set during the 2016 assembly elections, marking a significant milestone in the state’s electoral history.
Election officials reported that the voting process was largely peaceful, with only minor incidents reported from a few locations. Initial data shared by voting officials indicated that the number of female voters slightly exceeded that of male voters. The voting percentage among women was 85.96%, while it stood at 84.80% for men. Voters from the third gender recorded a turnout of 36.84%.
Voting commenced at 7 AM across thousands of booths, with long queues of voters observed throughout the day, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. Election officials attributed this high level of participation to increased voter awareness, improved voting infrastructure, and measures to facilitate access to polling stations.
For the first time, all voting centers in Assam were monitored through live webcasting, enabling the Election Commission to oversee the process in real-time. Senior officials, including the Chief Election Commissioner and other election commissioners, closely monitored the voting to ensure transparency and a smooth process.
Over 250,000 polling staff were deployed across 63,084 voting centers, with all arrangements finalized a day in advance. Before voting began, mock polls were conducted in the presence of candidates’ representatives to ensure thorough preparation and confidence in the process.
Several new initiatives were introduced for voter convenience, including colorful photographs of candidates on EVM ballot units, mobile phone deposit facilities, redesigned voter information slips, and limiting the number of voters to 1,200 at each polling center to reduce crowding.
Special arrangements were also made for persons with disabilities, including wheelchairs, volunteer assistance, and transportation facilities to polling centers, further enhancing participation.
With such a remarkable turnout, Assam has set a new benchmark in electoral participation, clearly reflecting voters’ enthusiasm and commitment to the democratic process.
