Tuticorin, July 22: The bail petition for DMK legislator G.V. Markandeyan, arrested in connection with a defamation case against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, will be heard on Wednesday in a Tuticorin court.
Markandeyan was apprehended by the Tuticorin District Crime Branch on Tuesday. He faces allegations of making false statements and inflammatory remarks against the Chief Minister during a public gathering in Kovilpatti.
According to police reports, Markandeyan was taken into custody and brought to the district police office, where he underwent nearly 11 hours of continuous questioning.
Following the interrogation, he was presented before the Judicial Magistrate No. 1 in Tuticorin. During the hearing, the investigating agency filed a petition requesting that Markandeyan be remanded into police custody for further questioning. However, the court denied this request.
The magistrate rejected the petition and placed Markandeyan in 15 days of judicial custody. Subsequently, he was sent to the Palayamkottai Central Jail. Immediately after the remand order, the legislator filed a bail petition in court.
The court accepted the petition and scheduled the hearing for Wednesday. According to the court’s online cause list, discussions regarding the bail application are expected to take place during the day.
This case is politically significant due to the ongoing confrontation between the ruling Tamilga Vetrik Kadagam (TVK) government and the opposition DMK. As a result, all eyes are on the outcome of the bail petition.
Following the legislator’s arrest, the DMK accused the government of targeting opposition leaders by embroiling them in criminal cases. Meanwhile, the ruling party maintains that the law will take its course and that no one is above the law.
The court’s decision on the bail petition will determine Markandeyan’s immediate legal standing, while the police investigation into the matter will continue.
